Plus sachin can bowl...
So whoever thinks that sachin should retire.... look at the stats before you try to be grandiloquent just as Mr. Chappel Tried to be !!

People have often criticised Sachin for not being a match winner. Here is a compilation of his 41 centuries. Out of the 41 hundreds, 11 hundreds have gone in vain.
lets analyse each of them.

1. 137 off 137 balls Vs SriLanka at Delhi in 1996 World Cup. India scored 271/3 in 50 overs. The only other 50 score was from Azhar. SL made 272 in 48.4 overs. Manoj Prabhakar had 4-0-47-0. He also opened in the innings with Sachin and scored 7 of 36 balls.

2. 100 of 111 Balls Vs Pak in Singapore- Apr 96. India 226 all out in 47.1 overs, When Sachin was out score was 186/4. Pak had a reduced target of 187 from 33 overs.

3. 110 of 138 Balls vs Sri Lanka In Colombo - Aug 96. Again India 226 for 5 in 50 overs, Only other 50 score from Azhar (58 of 99 balls).Sachin has also bowled 6-0-29-1, the second most economical bowler and the only wicket taker (SL were 230/1 in 44.2) of the match next to Srinath. 7 bowlers were used by Azhar.

4. 143 of Balls Vs Aus at Sharjah, Apr 1998. This was chasing under lights. The qualifying match before the final. The whole world knows about this match. Still one interesting point, when Sachin was out India were 242 at 5 at 43 overs. Target was 276 in 46. Still India finished at 250/5 scoring just 8 of the next 3 overs. Great performance indeed.

5. 101 of 140 Balls against SL at Sharjah in Oct 2000. Indian score was 224/8 in 50 overs. (No other 50 score). SL got 225/5 in 43.5, Sachin also bowled 5-0-22-0, better economy rate than everyone except Srinath.

6. 146 of 153 Balls against Zimbabwe at Jodhpur - December 2000 India made 283 / 8 in 50 overs. Sachin was the last man to be dismissed, score was 235/8 at 46.3 overs when he was out. Agarkar and Zaheer Khan propelled India to 283 in the last 3.3 overs. When Sachin has scored 146 of 235 in 46.3 overs, you can guess what the other 8 great batsmen were doing against the World class Zimbabwe attack. Second Highest scorer was Zaheer Khan with 32. Zim got 284/9 in 49.5 overs. Agarkar bowled the last over. Sachin also got 6-0-35-1

7. 101 of 129 Balls Vs SA at Johannesburg - Oct 2001 India got 279/5 in 50, Ganguly made 127 of 126 balls. When Ganguly got out, the score was 193-1 in 35.2 overs. Sachin was the last man to get out at 263. SA got 280 in 48.4 overs. Sachin bowled 9-0-51-0, second best in economy rate next only to Agarkar (10-0-45-1)

8. 141 of 135 balls Vs Pak at Rawalpindi, March 2004. India were chasing 329 and were 317 all out in 48.4 overs, 8 balls to spare. No other batsman made even a 50 (when chasing 300 ) and when Sachin was out, India were 245-4 in 38.4 overs. They needed 85 from 68 balls with 6 wickets in hand.

9. 123 of 130 Balls vs Pak at Ahmedabad, April 2005. India made 315/6 in 48 overs (48 over match), again no other 50 score. Second highest was Dhoni 47 of 64 balls, (third highest was extras - 39). Pak made 319 in 48 overs. The three quicks (Balaji, Nehra and Khan went for 188 runs from 26 overs between them taking only 2 wickets). Sachin bowled 6-0-36-1. No Harbhajan and no Kumble.

10. 100 of 113 Balls Vs Pak at Peshawar, Feb-2006. India were 328 all out in 49.4 overs. Pathan and Dhoni got 60 each. When Sachin was out when India were 305-5 in 45 overs. Managed only 23 in the last 5 overs. Pak scored 311/7 in 47 overs and won by D/L method. Could have been anybody's game. Sachin did not bowl.

11. 141* of 148 balls vs WI at Malaysia. India made 309 /5 in 50 overs. Sachin was not out. Pathan was the only other 50 scorer. WI made 141/2 in 20 overs and won by D/L method. Again could have been anybody's game.

In the other 31 instances India has won 30 times and once there was no result.

Now, think again when you say sachin's 100s were in the losing cause and that he is not a team player. It is a fact that for the entire 90's India played International cricket with only 1 player

stats dosen't show:
1. he makes a hell lot of runs against weaker teams
2. He chokes in important matches which is very important
3. Ponting dosen't fall into #2

Going by the stats, it would be naive to cast Sachin as a failure. But excuse me for being retrospective, he has not won MANY important matches for the team. I would justify Chappell's statements by stating the cause as his own Aussie cricket upbringing. I remember him bringing up the point in the Innings break about Bill Lawry being sacked as Captain (and player also I guess) when he did not perform for some matches even though he had an illustrious career.

Vishal Naidu said...

People say that sachin has not played on big occasions. I totally disagree with them.
According to me Sachin has has been the achieved greatest success only on big occasions.
This can be testified from the facts that his stats are better than any one else in the World cup.

Sachin single handedly brought india in to semi-finals in 1996 and the finals in 2003.
Fate hadn't been on his side in the finals in 2003 (thou i believe the match was lost in the first innings itslef)
and in semi-finals in 96. He just missed one match in 99 due to his fathers demise and India lost it to Zimbawbwe and
ultimately paid the prise in Super Six.

The Truth is that not even viv richards, ponting , clive loyd , lara , Miandad have been more effective and
dominant that Sachin has been in the world cups.

The aim of this blog has only been to bisabuse people from the hypothesis that has been formed by speculating.
Dont speculat please have a look at the stats.

don't talk about '99 world cup. it was just one-off match against kenya iirc. agreed he played like GOD in '96 WC and '03 WC.
but it still dosen't justify my #2. he chokes in pressure situation (especially while chasing targets, again don't remind me of '03 match against pakistan, i know). there have been numerous more instances where he has failed at the top while chasing targets.

you will definitely agree with me that he's a choker in test matches. i don't think he ever made runs in test matches when team reqd. to win a match facing a moderate total or draw a test match by batting thru a day (again, don't remind me of 136 against pakistan in chennai, i guess that's the only innings he stood out but nobody supported him)

Vishal Naidu said...

That is the exact problem with the people right now. When india looses The entire blame comes to Sachin and people say that he chokes when he is wanted.

Just as i said in my prev comment the Truth is that not even viv richards, ponting , clive loyd , lara , Miandad have been more effective and dominant that Sachin.

And None of them have played under the tremendous amount of pressure that Sachin has been into, don't tell me that if u cant handle pressure u aren't fit to play international cricket. coz nobody can even come close to imagining what it takes to be "Sachin Tendulkar" !!

Abhishek Joshi said...

It is very wrong to say Sachin single-handedly brought us to the semi-final in WC96. Here are his (approximate)scores in the matches
India V Kenya : 127* (Very Good. But against 1st timers)
India V West Indies: 70 odd (Good. Chasing 170something against a poor bowling. WI were not motivated in the series until their loss to Kenya)
India V Australia: 90 odd (Lost :(
India V Sri Lanka: 137 (Lost :(
India V Zim: 30 odd (Won. Not because of him... He bowled some leggies. But his contribution was negligible.)
India V Pak: 27 (I guess) (Thanks to Sidhu, Jadeja, Prasad and Kumble we won.)
India V Sri Lanka: 68 Lost :(
Even though he scored 500+ (532 I guess) runs in a tournament, the man of the series was given to Jayasuriya (212 rs, 6 wickets). Any guesses why?

Tushar said...

Sachin no doubt is great batsman but he is certainly not a match winner. The occasions where he led India to victory can be counted on fingers. Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting score over him in that area.
One big disadvantage of having sachin in team is - other batsman dont feel their responsibility with such a big heavyweight in team. And when he fails to perform on crucial moment (which is mostly the case now-a-days) others might feel that how can they do well when even sachin has failed.

Vishal Naidu said...

The whole intention of this blog is to change the biased opinion of ppl who think Sachin should retire.

Things like he doesn't win matches, chokes under pressure also applies to many other players as well, but they aren't privileged enuf to get all the intensive analysis as sachin usually gets.

He is not performing only to the level that he is expected out of him. But his performance is still comparable to all contemporary stars and better than most of his indian counterparts.

I cant simply understand why he should quit playing just bcoz he doesn't give as much pleasure in watching as he use to a few years back, but if you see carefully he has still performed.

His role has changed, if u actually see the stats u ll find that thou sachin performed exceptionally well initially but india faired very poorly in ODIs. But if you see now he is not as dominating as he used to be but still the wining %age of india has increased, this clearly shows that his role within the team has changed.

Not many would be able to achieve what he has and most importantly what he "can" .

I will put it in one single line.. Past cannot hide the current and you cannot expect it to be the future. Put mind on what he is currently doing..

Anonymous said...

dude, you have run out of comments,
Natwest Series '02: Sachin flopped in every match except 1 against SL (in which he made a century).
On the other hand, its Dravid/Ganguly who have played in crunch situations (remember another match when india rode on ganguly's century to chase 316 against pak).
again point is, there is no use keeping players who can't perform in crunch situations, let the other players take his place.

i know, ur intent is to show that sachin has played well over the last 3-4 yrs, but again statistics don't show the important stuff.

I will not comment anymore ... I hope you got the point :P

Vishal Naidu said...

@ anonymous don't think you have made a brilliant one liner....
u are trying to say tht past shldnt be used as a criteria for future, try telling this to an interviewer next time you apply for a job.. tell him tht thou my past record isnt good enuf but i have the potential to perform and then see tht wehthere u get selected..

@ rajat
its not tht only sachin has failed on all big ocassions, others have also failed on plenty of ocassions but they are not so intesively analyzed as sachin is....

Its easy to say tht sachin failed in the finals of xyz trophy or world cup but u dont see who brought u till tht stage on all such ocassions.

even when his carrer graph is down at this moment there is not more than 3-4 series in which he has averaged less than 40 .. (see the stats ) plus he has bowled well in many ocassion to compromise for tht..

The Point is tht he hasnt yet reached the stage where he should retire...

Unknown said...

sachin has to go anyways.. why not now so tht by next world cup indian team will have more years to think of new talented pools and train them... long time.. big experiences....

sadly
indian team lacks the immense passion required for cricket..... :-(

Anonymous said...

hey, it seems that Ponting is much better than Sachin..
I haven't seen Saching scoring consecutive centuries (except the one on his b'day)... think he's playing for records..

Anonymous said...

with the greatest cricketer( as u think) how many matches did India win ?? why is India's win % less than 50 ?
with so many fans, he can try politics..
