The Class or The Mass !!

After a grueling week of workless ness I sought some fresh air and grabbed one of my friends to go to the latest Bollywood flick "Bheja Fry". I was totally mesmerized by the comic act by Vinay Pathak who reiterates the fact of being an excellent upcoming comedian. It seems that The Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak Combo is grabbing everyones attention these days. Man!! They gave me a total recall of Khosla ka Ghosla. I had the loudest of possible laughs while i was watching the movie and so did most of the people around me. It was an entertaining 90 min show, and it managed to grip me throughout. The best thing about it being that it was a very vegetarian comic flick unlike many of its bawdy counterparts, the ones like Apna sapna money money , Golmaal , Bhagam Bhag etc etc... Clearly testifying the fact that "There are No Shortcuts to Success". So all you David Dhawans and the Priyadarshans of Bollywood do get some time to watch this movie!!

But as I was leaving the hall it came to my mind that "will this movie be a hit ??", "will it get what it deserves ??" of course not was the instinctive reply. It wasn't the first time that this thought had come to my mind. I now remember plenty of occasions when this has happened, i thought on similar lines for Kabul Express, Khosla ka Ghosla , Swades , Lakshya , Yuva etc etc. I keep wondering why movies like Dhoom2, Krishh , KANK and many others have flourished in terms of their box office collections and they manage to do so without any remarkable performances , stories , screenplay and innovativeness. May be I am being naive when i wonder about it, coz everyone around me seems to know the answer and each one tells me a unique version of his\her theory.

There are times when i think may be what’s "Entertainment" for a well educated IT professional with cosmopolitan tastes and open mindedness of a trendy city dweller like me isn't the same for many others OR may be that I am not looking at these movies as they are ought to be looked at. As often cited "We Don't see things as They are but We see things as We are !!".

Looking at the bigger picture I think that some movies are actually targeted for "The Class" section of the society while others are just meant for "The Masses". (Hey did i just say that i belong to "The Class”, What a bloody braggart i am!! damn me!!) But then is a successful movie the one, which is liked by The Class or The Mass?? The optimal solution sounds much better. But then how many of the successful movies will satisfy the optimum criterion? After giving it a thought i conclude that A successful movie is the one which does what it is meant to do, the one which fulfills the hype which it created, the one which satisfies the expectations either of the Producers or the Consumers. But like most things in life they can't always satisfy us all. Poor filmmakers they will always be criticized no matter what. Its true then that success doesn't come for free you have to pay some or the other price for it.

But then what’s the point of this whole blog ???? The problem i see with many of The Mass appealing movies is that they are released with the sole intent of making profit rather than the "ideal" motive of making movies, which has to be "Entertainment". So the masala makers will get a star-studded cast and a go for a hit formula based strategy to achieve it. After all The Masses definitely belong to the idol-starved section of this nation, and these stars surely dominate the Indian mindscape. Though there isn't a shortage of ideas and scripts here but the masala makers won't risk into these ventures by putting their millions at stake when plagiarism seems to easily yield what they seek.

There is no doubt that at the end of the day when it comes to evaluations (which are a plenty full these days) it will be the masala flicks which will receive all the accolades while "my favorite lot" will have to be satisfied with a trickle of critical acclaims which hardly counts :( .

"The way I see it" there is something definitely wrong with the products of Indian Film industry and most of its Consumers. May be that’s the reason that The Class like to seek solace in Hollywood!!

A very nice articulate piece, Vishal! Awesome! But I would disagree with your claim that the MASS movies are popular formula movies which do not provide entertainment. I think such movies are made only for entertainment no matter how cheap and poor it might be. People like the movies where their super-stars ( read super-humans) do the usual latka-jhatka and dishum-dishum and then finally save the day with their daredevilry. It is the same reason why movie such as "Main Hoon na" is a HIT, whereas "Swades" is just an average movie. But I guess now-a-days crossover movies are becoming THE thing because of the multiplex crowds. I am sure "Bheja Fry" would get it's due, just as "Khosla ka Ghosla".

Its the era when Shakalaka Doom Doom is said to be inspired by Amadeus and the Shakalakakakaka... the masterpiece ! How would movies like Bheja Fry which promises to be a simple, uncomplicated, natural comedy get the hype it deserves ? :(

It all depends upon what people want... and thats what producers do... WHY WOULD SOMEBODY PUT HIS HARD EARNED MONEY TO STAKE JUST TO TRY OUT DIFFERENT SUBJECTS WHEN HE CAN GET THE BEST OUT OF MASALA FLICKS

In India a movie cost $ 4 million to cast SRK OR Aamir OR AB. 1/4th of the cost is taken by these actors and they bring crowd to the final destination..

So after paying so much to the actors, If I be a producer I wont finance to subjective movies... I would prefer Masala that will reserve my profits...

WHY DO THEY DO IT?
Thats what people want...

If you see all well criticized movies go for a small penny of profits and sometimes loss just because people here want to see their fav actors on screen no matter what the story is... what the subject is... and small budget "well made movies" suffer because they don't have stars performing .

Wonder what would happen if AK was not casted in Lagaan...

I don't know sometimes it confuses me...

Well we are not the class... I don't believe in this ... we are one of the mass

CLASS & MASS are books of fantasy

Its our inner child that don't want to accept the reality...

Well Need to go for a meeting... will update my feedback... let me think for some time :)) ha hha ha

I don't think you got the point which the blog tries to convey.

>"CLASS & MASS are books of fantasy
"
There is a huge gap between the movie businesses in metros and the ones in small towns and this is bcoz there is a huge gap in tastes of the people. So Definitely there is the class and the mass !!

As per ur 2nd point u say that the producers are justified in making masala flicks for the sake of their profit.

For the matter any good business which flourishes on its huge customers base is justified in doing so only when the Producers keep the public interest as their 1st priority rather than their own profits.

And if the mass consumers are satisfied with the current star-studded masala flim concept (naye naye paket main beche tumko cheej purani...)then as i stated in the concluding section of the blog there is certainly something wrong with both the Consumers and the Producers and both need retrospection.

suppose Mr A is a software engineer AKA member techincal.
A goes to office, codes something, reads something, listens something all that stuff.
At the end of the day he thinks,,Oh man I am not doing the right thing to me.I am just part of a crowd known as s/w engineer.
neither me nor my work has class.
So He does a number of different things.Like setting goals of MS MBA or getting attached to some big guns in industry like MS,Google.
The ground reality remains same.He still doing the mass work everyday coz this is the way to remain in the industry.Meanwhile he tries to update his knowlwdge and skill as much as he can.
So Mr.Naidu Film industry is an Industry and to survive it needs mass more than anything.
And the presence of class is just a mark of few individuals giving response to thier inner calls of meaning and purpose in life.

no doubt most movies in india are awesome bussiness propositions

may the souls of dadasaheb phalke, hrishikesh mukherjee and satyajeet ray rest in peace

People like rakesh roshan start counting moolah from coke and bournvita well before the film is released. they use all the formulae and starcast to ensure that they make the cut crorewise.

i think people like mani ratnam, vishal bharadwaj and anurag kashyap, ashutosh gowarikar etc are brave, they are keeping the cinema of the classes alive.

When you discuss about what a cosmopplitan guy ( IT proffesional or whatever) does for entertainment and what he deserves,

my question to you is:

DOESN'T YOUR MIND BOGGLES AND YOU FEEL OUT OF PLACE WHEN YOU SEE THE f**KING MEDIA, FARTING AROUND WITH NON SENSE STORIES??

THOSE NON SENSICAL PEOPLE WHO BURN EFFIGIES OF CRICKETERS AND COMMENT ABOUT THEIR EARNINGS.. ALSO THEY PLAY AND ADMINISTOR CRICKET FROM THEIR MOUTHS...
AND MEDIA SHOWS THAT ON TV??

like you mentioned, i agree that many other things exist that we dont deserve and would never understand.

BJB is ruled out in its prime,
we are still ruled by Gandhis.

think about this.

we dont deserve that..
India is still considered as a 3rd world country of elephants.

we again dont desrve this ,,, do we
?

anyways you have put a very well scripted essay.. cheers.

Good Work Boss... So finally def'n for a successful movie bogs down to the one which does what it's intended to... :)

But what i feel that's a vicious circle we r caught in... bold movie makers do make a movie ... but its distributors job to take it to the public.... tell me how many of these aberrant movies do get shown at single screen theaters??? ... and i don't feel masses can afford the multiplexes as yet....

so boss... its just a matter of taking these movies to the masses.... who knows few of them will work...

S H A D A B R A S H I D said...

I agree Vishal... But I would still say its the "Name" that sells than the "Game"

Classes are few in number, but Masses gives the business... Are you sure all the people who watch movies in multiplexes are THE CLASS NOT THE MASS...

Think on this...

I am working on Windows when NT was released, then 95,98, 2000, ME, 2003 servers, XP and Now Vista...

I have experienced every of these OS... I found one thing in common... NAYE PACKET MEIN PURAANA MAAL... this is because IT SELLS! People are afraid to try different subjects even if they are self-confident that it would work.

And Yes... there is a need to change... but you cant change the majority.. and thats "THE MASS"

Anyhow... I appreciate the fact that you have come up with something interesting, its better writing this than going and watching ""AAP KA SUROOR"... HA HA HA
